Design a Planet
(Online Activity)

As NASA astrobiologists search for life, some are creating computer models to see many different possible habitable planets. In this activity, you too can test out a computer simulation as you try to find a combination that would produce a planet habitable to humans.

Math and Language Arts Lesson - "Math and Expository Writing Raft: The Cranky Calculator"

Math and Language Arts Lesson "Math and Expository Writing Raft:  The Cranky Calculator"

By Mary Pat Mahoney
Grade 4

Have you ever wondered how your calculator feels about you? You push its buttons every day… and sure, you’re happy with the right answer, but how does this make your calculator feel?!

In this lesson, your students will take on the persona of their calculators. They are cranky calculators that are tired of being pushed around by students who should be able to compute multi-digit multiplication on their own!

Students write a letter of complaint from a cranky calculator that wants the students to use pencil and paper (those two are always napping!) for a change. The letter includes detailed instructions on how to multiply multi-digit numbers.

Additionally, the letter of complaint explains why the calculator is so cranky, and what it expects the students to do about it.

This cross-curricular activity will fire up creative ideas, dramatic writing voice, and attention to logical, detailed directions. By writing out the steps to a mathematical process, the students reinforce their own understanding.

This assignment combines:
*the fourth grade standard to multiply four-digit numbers by one digit numbers with
*the Language Arts Writing standard of writing an informational/explanatory text

All the standards for the informational/ expository text are addressed with step-by-step graphic organizers and directions that guide students through writing out the mathematical operation and constructing an informational text in the form of a not-so-friendly friendly letter.

Revolutionary War Trading Cards

Are you looking for a way to add interest to your Colonial America / Revolutionary War unit? Do you want to add more activities to your learning stations? Are you searching for a project which integrates learning and technology? Download my Revolutionary War Trading Cards package!

Included is a set of 54 trading cards highlighting famous persons, places, events and documents of the Colonial America and Revolutionary War periods. These trading cards can be printed on card stock, laminated, and trimmed to produce a set of playing cards. The deck is divided into fours suits of thirteen with two jokers, allowing students to learn while playing any standard card game. Also included are the documents "Educational Trading Card Games" and "Creating Educational Trading Cards". The first document contains three original study games for classes and small groups. The second document gives teachers and students the step by step instructions required to create their own cards using an online resource. Enjoy!

Great quality color pictures when printed on card stock. My students love the information on the cards and the games they can play with them. GREAT product!!

I used these as flashcards for my students to play games to practice these events and important people. Very cool!

Excellent resource for our 4th grade unit on Colonial America & The Revolutionary War! One of my reading groups will use the "create a trading card" activity as an extension to our Revolutionary War unit.

George Washington's World for Kids (Online Activity)

This site reintroduces children to Washington as a bold, ingenious man of action, and Mount Vernon as his beloved home. After playing the games, children should feel newfound appreciation for Washington, and a familiarity with his Mount Vernon estate. With these goals, we developed three learning games that explore different aspects of Washington's life and achievements, from farmer to soldier to statesman.

Fact-Filled Bingo:
Revolutionary War

"Fact-Filled Bingo" is a computer program sure to bring excitement to your Revolutionary War unit. Instead of numbers, the talking robot calls out random persons, events and documents complete with pictures and interesting facts. Forty bingo cards suitable for laminating are provided. Also included is the computer program “Fact-Filled Slideshow”. Hook up your classroom PC/Mac to a SmartBoard or projector to highlight 48 different persons, events and documents. Again the talking robot does the narrating. Ideal for projects where students select a topic to research. Both programs use text-to-speech technology to make the robot speak. As a bonus I’ve included the manual “Text-to-Speech” which teaches you how to make your PowerPoint presentations talk. A free online utility accepts your text and coverts it to a sound file, which in turn can be imported into slides. Ideal for the computer lab!

Great fun! My students really enjoyed! Thank you!

This was fun and engaging for my students!

I am really looking forward to using this in my 6th grade history class! Great looking product!
