Enjoy this short PowerPoint presentation on the Characteristics of Life. This resource consists of 11 PowerPoint slides (and Google Slides!) that cover the basic characteristics of all living things. The slides are bright and colorful and contain some really cool pictures. As the PowerPoint is played, students can complete the 3-page worksheet. Use this in grades 8 and higher as an introduction to any life science or biology class. It is a great first day of school attention grabber designed to get students thinking and generate class discussion.
These 11 slides are part of a larger PowerPoint bundled package called Introduction to Biology: Scientific Method, Characteristics of Life, Graphing, and the Microscope. This resource contains a 75 slide Powerpoint as well as notes for the teacher and a notes outline for students to use as they move through the powerpoint.
What is the purpose of this activity?
This activity is best used at the very beginning of a life science or biology class to introduce the topic of “What is Life”? While the slides do state the characteristics of living things, the slides will not provide all of the answers on the student worksheet. The questions on the student worksheet are designed to get students thinking and to generate class discussion. Students may not know the correct answer to all questions if this activity is used as an introductory inquiry activity. Student answers to the questions may be based on information shown on the slides or based on student opinions, prior knowledge, or class discussion.
