FREE MISC. LESSON - “Color Wheel Made Easy”

by Mary Bown
Kindergarten - 5th Grade

If you have ever have had the pleasure to use paint with second graders, you know how quickly all of the paint can become mixed together forming a lovely shade of ... brown.

An art lesson that I do with my class requires the creation of a color wheel. After failing tremendously, I decided to create a little guide!

This is an easy print out. You simply print out the copy, make copies, and place them underneath of a clear plastic plate. The children can see the guide underneath. I have even given a reminder about starting with the primary colors as well as how to start with lighter colors when making secondary colors.

This is a simply sheet, and a simple idea, but will make your art lesson more successful!

Behavior Problems Got You Down?

Behavior Problems Got You Down? Have you been struggling
with Johnny or Sally since the first day of school? Do you rack your brain trying to come up with some creative ways to turn their unacceptable behavior around?  Let’s face it, some kids will always get under your skin, but you're the teacher, you're tough and you can deal with it.

Back to Basics: 3 Tried & True Place Value Games

And we're back! We just finished our fifth week of school(!) and it looks different. It feels different. But it is SO good to be back in person, masks and all. It's a tricky balance of remembering "how I used to teach in person" and "what worked during distance learning" and "how do I keep the curriculum rigorous, while planning for some students to inevitably be quarantined at some point and not miss instruction". Luckily, here are some tried & true math lessons and activities that work well for the beginning of the year.

Let's Go Fly A Kite - Using the Correct Geometry Term for Diamond!

This was a comment I received from a fourth grade teacher, "Would you believe on the state 4th grade math test this year, they would not accept "diamond" as an acceptable answer for a rhombus, but they did accept "kite"!!!!! Can you believe this? Since when is kite a shape name? Crazy."

Underdog Stories - Books and Movies

Teacher your students about underdog stories where the kid who is less than perfect ends up succeeding at something by the end of the story. Good triumphs over evil and the weak become strong. Great lessons for today's children.

FREE MATH LESSON - “MODELING MATH FLUENCY: Geometry Treasure Hunt”

by Class around the Corner
2nd - 6th Grade

HUNT FOR GEOMETRIC TREASURE AROUND YOUR SCHOOL!

UPDATE: Two additional tasks –
1. Protractor Pursuit (protractor template included);
2. Be A Playground Geometry Architect – design your own playground.
Also included is “Desired Results For Learners” with Essential Questions.
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP3
CCSS.Math.Practice.MP4; CCSS.Math.Practice.MP7

Your kids will love this Geometry Treasure Hunt. In the spirit of mathematical adventure you will give your class the mission of finding geometric patterns by exploring your school. It is relevant and engaging while students practice teamwork and collaboration.

Under your direction, student pairs or small groups will travel around your school looking for examples of geometry in authentic settings. They find it, sketch it, and tell its main purpose (design, structure, or symbol). Follow-up questions give the opportunity to write about math.

This is a great activity for reinforcing math vocabulary after you have introduced these geometric terms. You will love how the class collaborates, interacts, and applies reasoning and writing skills.

Set the parameters for where the groups/pairs can search. If you let them spread out, have some TAs or volunteers act as guides so that everyone knows the rules of place, purpose, and acceptable voice levels.

OPTION: You can provide some small item or treat when they’ve completed their search. No matter what the expectation is, your students will enjoy MATHEMATIZING!
