The LessonSpeak story: “I created LessonSpeak™ to help pass on my success to others who face the struggles of teaching on their own. When I stopped teaching as an English tutor at iTutorgroup, I struggled in transitioning from being an employee to being a freelancer. My biggest struggles at first were sourcing quality curriculum, finding clients, and charging enough to actually make a living. These obstacles are now a thing of the past.”

IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON BUYING THIS PRODUCT, PLEASE READ THIS:

The products in this shop are created by the LessonSpeak team and me (Johnny Ilca), an entrepreneur who happens to teach. Inspiration for these products came from my own personal struggles as a freelance online English teacher. I used to work at iTutorGroup and when I left the company, I struggled in finding quality material to continue teaching in that way. I paid freelancers on Upwork to make some for me but they were of poor quality and had wayyyyy too many mistakes. That is when I took it upon myself to create the best resources not just for myself but for all online English teachers! I am my very first and most loyal customer so you know that these materials have been vetted. However, I am only one person and everyone makes mistakes...

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Teaching Ideas Week #1”

by Connie
7th - 12th Grade

Hello, Classroom Colleagues,

Each week, I will upload a poster suggesting ideas you can incorporate into your lessons to deepen middle school and high school students' learning in the English Language Arts Cores: Literature, Literary Analysis, Writing, Vocabulary and Grammar.

* The products are all Priced unless specifically labelled Free. NOTE: The
Freebie may be for an elective and not a core.

* Teachers can find each idea under the Custom Category title above the
image on the poster.

Week #1 showcases:

Literature: "'Brave New World' Unit Plan" https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Connie/Category/Literature-Brave-New-World-Unit-Plan-394173

Literary Analysis: "A Fall Cornucopia: Literary Analysis & Writing Activities" https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/A-Fall-Cornucopia-Literary-Analysis-Writing-Activities-4149460

Grammar: "Grammar: Prepositions Lessons & Activities" https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Grammar-Prepositions-Lessons-Activities-37518

Writing: "Writing Activities "Utopian and Dystopian Society Novel Projects" https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Writing-Activities-Utopian-and-Dystopian-Society-Novel-Projects-1124376

Vocabulary: "Vocabulary: Juggling Meaning: Know Your Words" https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Vocabulary-Juggling-Meaning-Know-Your-Words-4049545, and

Journalism: "Journalism Infographic" (FREE) https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/JOURNALISM-INFOGRAPHIC-3839939

The "'Brave New World' Unit Plan" will take approximately 13 90 minutes-per-class days with 60 minutes on the book, and 26 55 minute periods with 20-30 minutes on the novel study. Since multiple activities are included in each of the other products, select those that meet your goals for that week, and save the rest for other times when you want to reinforce students' skills and abilities in one of the specific Core areas.

However you use them, each week you are adding engaging lessons and activities to your repertoire that empower students to strengthen their comprehension, critical thinking, discussion, writing, grammar and vocabulary skills. What a Win-Win for your students and you!

Enjoy a Teach It Now Day Every Day,

Connie

Back-to-School mini activities

These mini-activities will keep your students gainfully occupied while you tend to other students, have a partially-filled classroom for any reason, the get-to-know you time, or extra time at the end of the day. The activities for language arts and math for grades 3-6 include:

  • SLAM posters (Student Likes are Marvelous) (students sign their name and favorite under the topic)
  • Cooperative story time (using topic words, students create a sequential story)
  • What I didn’t do last summer (an amusing twist to the traditional creative writing assignment)
  • GOAL! Setting goals for the school year (help your students set yearly goals)
  • Back-to-School Math Review Bingo (good for any level)
  • Create Your Own Math Problem (students create word problems for their classmates to solve)
  • School Supplies Sudoku (this sudoku uses images rather than numbers)
  • School Supplies Sudoku - Answer

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “FREE Response to Literature Bell-Ringer Writing Tasks, Quickwrite Warm-Ups, CCSS”

by Laura Randazzo
9th - 12th Grade

Help students connect with literature with this set of bell-ringer writing prompts!

For each writing task, students are given a compelling quote and asked to explain the author’s message and the extent to which they agree or disagree with the idea. Then, they’ll support their position, providing reasons and examples from their own life experience, observations of others, or academic studies. The magic happens when students share their answers either in small group or full-class discussion. In that discussion, students will begin to see how the quote relates to many modern life situations.

There are several ways you might want to use these slides/handouts in your physical or digital classroom, including:

1. Use as a routine bellringer writing/discussion activity to begin class one day each week.

2. Use the writing prompts whenever a lesson wraps up more quickly than planned or to help fill an emergency sub plan.

3. Use thematically related prompts as a supplement to novel studies.

4. Use as timed writing practice.

This collection of five slide/handout sets includes words of wisdom from the following:

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

All American Boys by Jason Reynolds

This download includes:

• 5-page PDF of slides you can project in a traditional classroom setting

• 5 JPG slide images you can drop into a Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint presentation to share in a secured online classroom

• 5-page PDF of full-sheet handouts where students can write their answers (They also could use binder paper or a blank MS Word or Google Doc to complete this task.)

• 5-page PDF of half-sheet handouts if you’d like students to write shorter answers

Want more? A semester bell-ringer collection of 18 additional slide/handout sets are available here:
