Play with your Food

Tis the season for eating! This fun figurative language activity contains 60 cards, including 48 colorful food-themed idioms/expressions and 12 food-themed kid friendly jokes! Answer key is included.

Use these cards alone, with your own game board, or have the kids discuss and draw the literal and figurative meanings of the expressions. Jokes are a fun way to address language goals too!

And, understanding of figurative language is aligned with the common core (2.L.5., 3.L.5., 4.L.5., 5.L.5)

My students had a lot of fun with these. I hope your students do too!

It is also a time when we need to be polite, socially appropriate and friendly with family and friends. Here's a quick and easy following directions activity that's perfect for the Thanksgiving season. Simply print out the directions and black/white turkey coloring page. Then make as many copies as you need for your students. I like to read the directions aloud to have the kids practice their listening and following directions skills, but you may choose to make it an independent activity and have them read the directions to themselves. Do whatever works for you!

Social Skills for Teenagers

Social Skills for Teenagers

This kit contains 52 cards. (24 Talk About It cards, 16 Role Play cards, and 16 Social Media cards). These are great for small social skills groups. The vocabulary and topics included are best for middle school and high school students. 

The Talk About It Cards cover a wide range of topics from asking someone to go out on a date to asking for a raise at work.

For the Role Play cards, I like to have multiple teams role play the same scenes, because there may be several correct ways to “act out” the situation. It is also fun sometimes to role play the situation in an inappropriate way and then discuss why it may be hurtful or inappropriate or offensive. Be sure to brainstorm and discuss how body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice and word choice are all important to communication. 

The Social Media cards focus on texting, cell phone etiquette, online social sites and computers.

To use this kit, simply print out all sheets and then cut apart and laminate (optional) the cards, and you are good to go! They are all in black and white (except the cover page) to go easy on the color copying budget.
