Vocabulary: I have… /Who has…? CHRISTMAS

These Vocabulary Building Activities provide opportunities for Pre-K (preschool), Kindergarten, and Grade One children to practice identifying and naming items that can be found, and activities that people do, during the Christmas holiday celebrations.

 in   PRINT LETTERS

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Vocabulary-I-have-Who-has-CHRISTMAS-3468948

or     SASSOON INFANT FONT

CONTENTS
20 bright and engaging pictures (that can be used as story starters).
3 formats and three games included:
Two pictures on the cards - 8 cards per page / and a larger format with 4 cards per page
One picture per card – 4 cards per page -  open-ended.

How to play the game(s):
  • Use the CHRISTMAS Chart as a reference.  Identify and discuss all of the cards as a class, or group.  If the child describes the picture in different words…that’s OK. (example: instead of ‘Christmas lights’- ‘lights’)  Use the correct vocabulary to convey meaning. (example: as a class you may decide to use “cookies” instead of a “plate of cookies”. )
  •  Bring in things from nature to touch and feel.

Example - Game 1
The first player chooses any card, and reads it. For example, “I have a plate of cookies.  Who has a cupcake?” That child then places that card in a container, that has been placed on the table.
Everyone looks at their cards to see if they have a cupcake. The person who does then says, “I have a cupcake. Who has a candy cane?” That child places that card in the container, and so on.
Play continues until all of the cards are in the container.  (Play circles back to the ‘plate of cookies’ starter card.)

Example - Game 3
Using a bingo dabber, each child will identify, find, and mark off the picture that matches what has been called out. (e.g. bells, Christmas tree)
The game ends when all of the cards have been played.

 Have fun learning!

Bringing ' Reading Recovery ' Strategies into the Classroom (and homeschool!): Sound Boxes

Read Rec Sound boxes

In an uncertain financial climate, an increasing number of school boards are cutting Reading Recovery, an early intervention program created for grade one students who are struggling most with learning to read and write. Created by Dr. Marie M. Clay, this preventative program is only taught by trained Reading Recovery teachers in schools that are actively supporting the program.  It was designed as an intervention.

Many of us who have been fortunate enough to have taught this program will speak of the amazing professional development that accompanies the Reading Recovery role; from the lessons, readings and experiences. I will forever be grateful for the eight years of training and experience that I now apply to my teaching of small early literacy groups in special education.

Please note that Reading Recovery procedures were designed to use as an intervention with the first grade students scoring lowest on a series of assessments, and not for the majority of students. That is the position of the program's creator, Dr. Marie Clay, and its representatives today.

It is my own position that the strategies I write about and refer to as 'Reading Recovery strategies', have been used outside of the Reading Recovery program for many years, work well for many emergent and early readers and writers, and can be adapted for various learning situations.

The following was originally posted as How to help kids hear all of the sounds in words:

When children learn to write, they need to understand how letter sounds work together to make words. They must hear the sounds out loud first before relating them to letters. 'Elkonin' or sound boxes are used worldwide and taught as Reading Recovery™ procedures to help children make the connection between the sounds they hear in a spoken word and the letters that represent those sounds in print. Each box represents a sound in a word. It is important to start with short, simple words in order to learn the procedure and consolidate basic phonetic skills (consonants and short vowels) before moving on to words with letter combinations and exceptions. Please watch this video for an introduction to using Elkonin boxes:

Step by step guide to using sound boxes:

Bug1 sm 1. Say the word slowly (bug), stretching out the three sounds in the word, and ask the child to repeat it. Point out the pennies and tell the child that the word 'bug' has three sounds in it. Reinforce that the left side is the 'starting' side.

Bug2 sm 2. Using one finger, repeat the word as you slide the pennies into the boxes. All pennies should be in the boxes by the time you finish saying the word. The child does this next, listening for sounds as each penny slides in. Record the letter sound in its appropriate box.

Bug3 sm 3. Line all three pennies up again, and repeat, listening for sounds. Ending sounds are easier to hear than middle, vowel sounds. Beginners will probably hear the final sound of a word next. Record it.

Bug4 sm 4. Repeat the procedure. Vowels are difficult, and it is fine to fill it in for a child who is just mastering consonants. Once beginning and ending sounds are in place, emphasizing the middle part of the word can help a child identify the vowel sound.

Bug5 sm 5. Put it all together. With a pointer finger, sweep under the letters from left to right saying the word slowly and looking at the letters while reading the word. Together these letters spell ‘bug’.

For products using sound boxes with three levels of support, check out the Read & Write & More section of my TpT store. I will be updating some of the older versions to include sound boxes through the summer of 2016, so please check the preview before purchasing! Samples are included below.

Fantasy

This is a BUNDLED version of both my Fantasy Reading Unit AND my Fantasy writing unit offered at a discounted price. Buy all your Reading and Writing lessons for a month for the cost of two cups of coffee! Fantasy Reading and Writing Unit

For Writer's Workshop teachers covering the fantasy genre, this writing unit is a must. It is a resource containing 14 lessons that carry students all the way through one of the most challenging genres to write. The lessons fit perfectly with both the old and updated version the Columbia Teacher's College Writer's Workshop fantasy series of mini-lessons. The lessons also encourage students to use an amazing tech integration component resource ( a setting and symbolism database blog). Writing skills specific to fantasy each build from lesson to lesson. There is another content here to cover a a five week unit on fantasy writing. Teaching writing is challenging. This unit in many ways teachers teaches about what to teach in writing!

Content NOT covered in the preview file includes:
Writing that contains symbolism
Writing with dialogue
Proof reading for fantasy specific terminology
Life a line elaboration technique
Distinguishing between summary and action scenes

and much more...

For even expert teachers of the fantasy genre, this unit contains a few twists and turns to add to their portfolio of writing instructional approaches. This unit is also a perfect compliment to my other resource: Fantasy Reading.

Fantasy Writing Unit Workshop Model Complete Set of Structured Lessons

This is an outstanding 13 page unit that supports the Fantasy Reader's Workshop Unit. It is an entire unit of reading skills that can be used by any 4th-6th grade student during a course of study on fantasy. The resource begins as a tic-tac-toe menu of 9 unique reading skills that discuss reading skill related to the genre. Skills include:
Nuanced Characters
Major themes
Multiplicity of Problems
Learning Curve
Symbolism
Elements of Fantasy
Archetypes
Plot lines and backstories
Setting of fantasy
External and Internal Conflicts

A list of I CAN... statements that readers should be able to do with their independent reading books

A list of archetypes for student reference

Video explanation (copy/paste link)
http://www.screenr.com/9QR7

The idea is that the teacher models these skills using the class read-aloud and then students practice the skills through book clubs, paired reading text, or independently using their independent reading books. Students can select the best 5 or 6 skills that suit their books. Pages are created for note taking and spaces for students to record their thinking. (Students can simply use the sections to categorize their stick note thinking or write directly into the booklet.) Students would be expected to work through the unit towards the creation of the final project - a presentation of their novel in a movie trailer using iMovie (or your preferred piece of technology). Guidelines for this additional activity are also provided. This is NOT a book report unit. Citing evidence is a key component of CCSS. This units forces students to cite evidence from their stories and go further by interpreting this evidence in preparation for their final class presentations. This is perfect for getting students to truly think 'deeper' about the fantasy genre. Advanced 4th grade readers could easily use this unit too. As the reading skills are generic, they are applicable across the 5th-7th grade age range as the complexity of the novels students use should create natural differentiation. This unit is a must for any study of fantasy or for a fantasy book club unit.
