Social Skills All Year

by Kathy Babineau
Grades KG-6

This kit contains 240 cards covering seasonal scenarios and topics. For each month of the year (including summer months), there are 4 Topic Talker cards, 4 Role Playing cards, 4 Facial Expression/Body Language cards, 4 Problem Solver cards, and 4 Perspective Taker cards, for a total of 20 cards for each month of the year. Cards are simply marked with the month of the year, but they can also be mixed and matched throughout the year if you would rather not focus on themes.

The Topic Talker Cards offer suggested topics of conversation, many of which are related to timely topics and holidays. Some other generic school based topics have been included in order to be sensitive to students who may not observe particular holidays. These topic talker cards are helpful for students who are trying to work to maintain on-topic exchanges with peers, addressing attention to conversation and even general expressive and receptive language.

The Role Playing cards also address many timely topics. When using the Role Playing cards, I like to have multiple teams role play the same scenes, because there may be several correct ways to “act out” the situation. It is also fun sometimes to role play the situation in an inappropriate way and then discuss why it may be hurtful or inappropriate or offensive. Be sure to brainstorm and discuss how body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice and word choice are all important to communication.

The Facial Expression/Body Language cards are fun to use to think about and practice ways that we communicate with our faces and our bodies.

The Problem Solver cards offer students opportunities to think about social situations, analyze the problem and generate practical solutions. There is not always just one correct answer to these problems.

The Perspective Taker cards encourage students to put themselves in a situation or in someone else’s shoes and decide how they might feel.

To use this kit, simply print out all sheets and then cut apart and laminate (optional) the cards, and you are good to go! They are all in black and white (except the cover page) to go easy on the color copying budget.

I hope you like this and find it helpful when working with your students!

Formulating Questions

by Kathy Babineau
Grades 1-4

Formulating Questions

Many of my students with language disorders have difficulty formulating questions.  This kit contains 45 answer cards (with colorful pictures) and 45 question cards.  To prepare this product, Simply print, cut apart and laminate the cards.  There are several ways to use this card set.
Option #1:  Present the answer cards to students, and ask them to come up with logical questions to match the answer cards.  The point is to try to generate questions using correct form and question type.  There will be many possible correct questions to each “answer”.  Cue or prompt verbally and/or show the “Words That Begin Questions” mini-poster visual included with this product.  Kids can give answers verbally or for more practice or to make this an independent activity, they can write out the questions in a notebook or on whiteboards.
Option #2:  Use the question and answer cards together using a matching format.  To do this, place cards face up on the table (or face down if you want to use a game format), and ask the child to find logical matches with question and answer cards.  Because there are so many cards, it may be easier to present 10 at a time, but that is your choice.
Option #3:  Present the question cards to students and ask them to generate logical answers.  This was not the original intent of the product, but it can be used this way.  Since I usually have groups of kids with a variety of language goals, this allows for some flexibility in targeting goals and addressing asking and answering questions.
There are some answer cards that may match multiple question cards and vice versa.  Use your own discretion for acceptable answers.  For example, the question card “Where did the man put his money?” could match the answer cards “in his pocket” or “on the top shelf”.  An answer key is included to show the intended question and answer matches, although you can be flexible with this.

Thanks for checking it out!

Beach Themed Act It Out

by Kathy Babineau
Grades KG-4

Welcome Summer!
This kit contains 28 colorful Beach Themed “Act It Out” cards. Print them out, cut them apart and laminate them (optional). Use the cards with individual students, in small groups or in whole class lessons. Kids love to get silly with this activity, but it is also a wonderful way to address movement, body language and thinking skills. These can be used as a charades activity in which one child acts out what is on the card while others guess, or can be used more directly by having the kids simply act out what is on the card.

Management of a classroom is challenging, whether you teach special education or regular education, there are always a few children that are problematic to say the least. It is not always necessary to set up a behavior modification plan for the entire class. For some children, it is enough to give them a look, a tap on the shoulder, or just say something to them quietly. For others it is not so easy
