FREE MISC. LESSON - “Following Directions, Written Directions, Expectations Activity, Rubric (FREE)”

by Jessica Osborne
4th - 7th Grade

Following directions is a crucial concept for students. Sometimes they get so distracted by the end goal of a project they are creating, or even by what they are learning, that they forget to focus on reading and following the directions carefully. This often results in them getting a lower grade than they should, or them not being able to display what they truly know about a subject. This assignment reminds them of the importance of reading every word carefully in a set of directions.

Students will carefully follow a set of written directions to complete a task and create an exact design on a page. Then, they will trade papers with a partner, and the teacher will lead the class through grading the assignment on the rubric, checking to see that everyone followed the directions carefully. They will each instantly see how well they did, and questions are provided for the teacher to lead the class in a thorough discussion about the importance of following written directions.

This activity is great to do at the beginning of the school year to set expectations or anytime the students need a reminder to follow directions carefully. Throughout the year if they are falling into bad habits, you may be able to refer back to this activity to jog their memory, or repeat the activity at anytime.

FREE SCIENCE LESSON - “Arts, Science, Pre-K Up: Wolves Public Domain Clip Art (111 images)”

by J MASON EMERSON
Pre-Kindergarten - 12th Grade

This has 111 public domain images. Most of the wolf images are color photos but a few are black and white drawings. You can enlarge or shrink the public domain images’ sizes, move the images around, etc. The images are handy for any classroom (Pre-K through higher ed) and any age or ability level but teachers of art and natural studies in science will likely regard them as being of special interest. Teachers of Pre-K students up will find them handy for using as reward stickers, for classroom décor, etc.

This can save you a great deal of time and is usable for countless times over the years. Sources include wpclipart.com, clker.com, wikipedia.org, plates from the 1800s works of John Gould, John James Audubon, various federal government agencies such as fws. gov.

The reading component in this resource is Quick Notes About Wolves which is in first English then non-Castillian, Latin American Spanish which should help Spanish-speaking students in regular classes or ESL. If you don't have ELL's now, then you may later. It also has Basic Facts About The Wolf Families.

This is dedicated to my wife Barbara who taught science including biology and environmental science in Kansas City metro and Shawnee Mission West in particular for 28 years.

Sincerely,

J. Mason Emerson
