Second and third graders needs LOTS of time to work with tens and ones flexibly before we can expect them to nail hundreds... and eventually thousands!
This activity challenges students to determine some of the MANY WAYS TO MAKE A NUMBER for deeper understanding of place value and unitizing.
Place value understanding is SO MUCH MORE than identifying which is the tens column or how many ones a number has. Get students ready to use place value strategies for computation by thinking about numbers in ALL the ways they can be broken apart! 45 = 4 tens and 5 ones, but it can also be 3 tens and 15 ones or 1 ten and 35 ones. If students cannot easily add or subtract a ten from any number, then they need better understanding of place value. 2.NBT.A1 focuses on deeper understanding of TENS/ONES.
