Language Arts Lesson - "Summarizing Unit"

by Bethany Baptiste
3rd-5th grade

Watching readers transition from decoding text to comprehending it in a meaningful way is magical! Teaching young readers strategies to bring text to life will make learning to read
more fun and motivating.

This Summarizing Unit uses engaging activities that guide readers to master the reading strategy of finding main ideas and then summarizing what they read. Readers will summarize both fiction and nonfiction with two different techniques included in this unit. Throughout the unit, students will independently practice the strategy and then apply it to their own reading.

This unit includes:
  • 1 'Summarize Fiction' Poster and 1 'Summarize Nonfiction' Poster
  • 1 'Main Idea and Supporting Details' Poster
  • Find the Key Concept Activity
  • Galapagos Islands Main Idea and Details Worksheet
  • 2 'Short and Sweet Summaries' Posters
  • 8 Sort and Summarize Task Cards (4 Fiction, 4 Nonfiction)
  • 6 Hunting for Summaries Passages (3 Consecutive Fiction Passages, 3 Consecutive Nonfiction Passages)
  • 3 Post-It Practice Pages to Use While Summarizing during Independent Reading
  • 2 Student Posters to Display Summarizing Practice
  • 2 Double-Sided Summarize Bookmarks (Fiction and Nonfiction) with Reminders and Recording Notes Space

I hope you enjoy this unit and others from this series you can find in my store!

Language Arts- Nonfiction Book Report Project and Rubric

Every month my students read a different genre of book and complete a creative book report that they present to the class as part of their LA grade. The Nonfiction Book Report requires the students to learn about specific topic of their choice, read a nonfiction book and create a 3-D model or visual aid and a true/false quiz to give the class while they are presenting. It also includes a rubric for grading purposes.

Check out my store for other book report projects:

Language Arts Unit - "Amazing Animals of Rainforest Literacy Unit & Research Project"

The Amazon Rainforest is one of the most amazing places on earth! Students are fascinated by the unique animals and the enormity of the rainforest itself. This unit includes many authentic learning opportunities for the classroom including a full-color mini-mag (magazine) highlighting three unique rainforest animals found nowhere else, and a culminating animal research project.

This pack includes everything you need to teach, investigate, and learn all about the Amazing Animals of the Amazon Rainforest with a close up look at Poison Dart Frogs, Three Toed Sloths, and Playful Jaguars

It includes:
Full color Mini-Magazine for whole group or guided reading
Informational articles for older students or to use in place of the mini-mag, if desired.
24 Informational Reader Task Cards to use with Mini-Magazines
Classroom Poster Set—great for bulletin boards!
A Rainforest Research mural/poster project w/Rubric
Teacher Directions
End of the unit reflection

Because there are so many unique and interesting animals found in the Amazon Rainforest, it gives students a great chance to research and become an expert on specific animal. Students first learn about some of the other types of animals found in the rainforest and then research their assigned rainforest animal. Then they present the information to the class like an expert does during a workshop. It’s up to the teacher whether to have the students create a rainforest mural, poster, power point as their visual aid.

The full-color mini-book highlights:
Poison Dart Frogs
Three Toed Sloths
Pouncing Jaguars

Arctic Animals Reading Comprehension Passages - Non-fiction Task Cards {K-3}

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Arctic-Animals-Reading-Comprehension-Passages-Non-fiction-Task-Cards-K-3-1595369
This year, I have invested a lot time in making non-fiction reading fun. My students loved the earlier ones I made about spiders so now I have a plan to create quite a few on various different topics! This one here includes passages about polar bears, walruses & wolves.

They are leveled which means students in late kindergarten and grade 1 can read at level 2 and students from grades 2-3 can read through the passages for level 2. It also includes printable activities to support the passages after reading. Print, laminate and hand out then re-use! :)

Check out TPT The Sea of Knowledge Store, TPT ESL World, or The Sea of Knowledge Blog for more.

Thank you for reading!
