Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

By: Laurie Fyke @ Primarily LearningKindergarten – Grade 1

Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

Amazing Sight Word Practice happens with Look SAY Cover Write Check!
Learn to many of the spell sight words often found in programs like Jolly Phonics (Jolly Learning Ltd.)  with Independent Word Work at a center or in a small group.  The children will learn to read and spell words with irregular spellings that have a look and say approach for learning. They will have the opportunity to practice using these words in sentences.
Included in the 90 words: high frequency words that can be “tricky” due to multiple spellings (homophones) or spellings that have not yet been studied.

A great resource for reading teachers, Reading Specialists, Title 1 Teachers, Special Education Teachers, Home-school, Classroom Teachers  and Parents. Centre or Small Group Activity

I found my students really enjoyed using file folder cards to check and cross-check their work as they learned to correctly spell words with irregular spellings … on their own!

Thank you for visiting my store!

Have a great day!

Auditory Processing Task Cards for Preschool & Kindergarten

By: Laurie Fyke @ Primarily Learning
Preschool – Kindergarten

(Teacher Reference)

What is Auditory Processing?
From the time our children are babies, we seem to naturally draw their attention to environmental sounds, and in turn, begin to develop their auditory processing skills.
  • “The doorbell is ringing.”
  • “Do you hear mommy’s footsteps?”
Early activities and games, where your child learns to identify and recall sounds, includes things like making and identifying the sounds of specific animals, putting on a dramatic presentation, singing, recalling a rhyme, and dancing to music!
  • “I am a dog barking!”
  • The cat says, “Meow.”
  • “What does a lion say?”
  • “I can sing a song!”
  • “I’ll tell you a story.”
Check out these 30 task cards with activities to develop auditory awareness skills!

Try this! Put varying items in recycled small plastic juice bottles that have twist tops.

  • Wash the containers.
  • Collect items to place in the container such as: rice, coins, sand, dried beans, pull tabs, pebbles
  • Fill two containers to the same level (e.g. ½ full. ¼ full), with the same item.
  • Hot glue the lids onto the containers.
  • Use a colored marker to place matching dots on the bottom of the two containers that make the same sound.

Activities:

  • Shake the container to hear different sounds.
  • Shake your container as you sing a familiar song. Try to use the beats of the music.
  • Demonstrate shaking patterns. Ask your child to copy the pattern.
e.g. | |   |       |  Use the rhythm of familiar songs.
  • In a classroom, create three groups of children. Hand out similar containers to each group (e.g. containers filled with sand, beans, coins).   Create a soundscape as you suggest a rhythm for each group, and then direct the children on when to play.  They are following both oral, and visual directions!
  • Wrap a piece of paper around the outside of several pairs of containers… that have the same sound. Place the containers at a center, and ask the children try and match the sounds. (Listen to find to containers filled to the same level with the same material.)
Find more at your fingertips” ideas to develop Auditory Awareness, Discrimination, and Memory Skills with these 30 Amazing Task Cards!

Please Note: Each child is different, and children develop at varying rates.  Your 3 - 5-year-old may be quietly observing the world around or demonstrating determination, and persistence.  Some children will quickly grasp, and enjoy an activity, while others need repeated lessons. Some children are bold and daring, while others are shy and cautious. Remember to provide numerous and varied learning opportunities because children do not all learn at the same time, or in the same way. Have fun!

Have a great day!

Giant Letter Flashcards work well with programs like Jolly Phonics!

By: Laurie Fyke @ Primarily Learning
Preschool – Grade2

Phonics fun! Use these Giant Letter Flashcards, to identify, match, or sort letters and sounds!  Create words for reading... or as the students hold the cards, segment words for spelling practice!

I found my students really enjoyed these cards as they explored sounds, and created words on their own!  What a wonderful word work resource for teachers using Jolly Phonics, Reading Specialists, Title 1 Teachers, Special Education Teachers, Classroom Teachers and Parents.

Some Activity Ideas
·           Introduce the letter(s) as the sound is introduced.
·           Hand out the letters of sounds you have taught and say, “If you have the /s/ hold it high!”
·           Hand out the letters of sounds you have taught and say, “If you have one of the sounds for jump…/j-u-m-p/ come to the front.”  Talk about putting the sounds in the order they are sounded to make the word.  Ask the class to help you keep saying /j-u-m-p/.  After the sounds are in order stand at the left side and crank your arms in a circle to make a “sound machine”.  As the hands crank the sounds get closer together and… /j-u-m-p/ becomes jump! (Hand out enough cards so that each student has a turn making a word.)
·           Use a clothesline and pegs to make words.
·           Make a line in front of your favorite letter.  Tell why you like this letter.  Graph how many people liked each letter.
·           Sort the letters.  Explain your sorting rules.
·           Say the letter sound.  Reference the letter(s) to record (print) the sound.  Check your work.

Have a great day!
