Free! Halloween Spooky Tales Writing

Make narrative writing fun and S-P-OO-K-Y!

How many kids love to read and write Halloween stories? Most kids love to read scary stories - as long as they're not too scary! Here's a chance for them to write their own with a little scaffolding. The scaffold is that they have a good start or context to begin writing.

This could be a week's worth of writing lessons if you choose to have students pick a starter per day. The same planner / writing frame and stationery papers can be used again for new stories.

Easy writing process--and easy independent work for class, substitute lesson plan, or homework. Here's what your spooky writers do:

  1. First, kids choose a spooky tale starter from five story starters.
  2. Then, they fill in a spooky tale planner/map with pre-writing prompts to scaffold narrative writing.
  3. Alternatively, they can use the prompt cards with the same story starters on them for literacy centers. (Some kids also just need a single prompt in front of them, to help chunk the task into a smaller one!)
  4. Finally, they write on either of the two stationery pages provided.

Please stop in and check it out...it's free! Your kids will love scaring each other with their stories!
Thank you!

October--A Time for Spooktacular Spiders...and Informational Writing!

I had a blast when I first created this resource for my second and third graders. My reading groups (grades 1-5) were telling me they wanted to read creepy Halloween-y stuff, like bats and spiders. While I had amassed a collection of "arachnidia" and "bat-phernalia" from the library, I needed more of an interactive resource for my hands-on learners.

So, I made this Spider Facts Booktivity--an envelope book. This was great for my second graders who were good at following directions. It took a little patience for them to arrange the topic sentences, and cut out the fact book cards. But my third grade reading group really took off with this. I also had a reading group of fourth graders who could not wait to get their hands on spider-related material. When they finished, they were proud of their pocket-sized envelope books, and the idea that they could keep all their spider fact cards in one place.

This spider facts booktivity is just another way to entice kids into reading and writing about spiders, while creating a hands-on resource they can refer to again and again for either reading or writing. Consider using the components to create a lap book or a poster!  This doubles as a science/ELA lesson, which is a great way to squeeze in that extra learning time. Just so you know, this spider facts set does not make any reference to Halloween. But it does make a Halloween alternative during this spooktacular month.

Thank you for checking this out!
And if you are not crazy about spiders, I'll understand if you don't check it out =)

Vocabulary & Reading Response Lesson - "The Wolf's Chicken Stew"

by First Grade Diva Creations
1st & 2nd Grade

This mini literature resource is inspired by The Wolf's Chicken Stew by Keiko Kasza.

This resource does not include the story.

These mini literature resources are designed to help busy teachers! They can be used in many ways! Here are a few ways you may choose to use them.

1. Grab a copy of the book, print, and teach. They are perfect when you need just a little something extra to get you through a busy week!

2. They could also easily be left for a substitute teacher!

3. Homework is one of the hardest issues I face as a teacher.  How do I make it meaningful and easy to manage? I am creating these mini reading resources to be homework packs for next year.  I plan to print out vocabulary and reading response pages and send them home in a waterproof bag with a copy of the book. Families can choose to do a minimum of one vocabulary page and one reading response page. I think this is a great way to get quality literature in the homes of my students.

Critters, Scrumptious, Craving
The three vocabulary pages are meant to teach these three words deeply. These vocabulary pages can be easily aligned to CCSS.
The first time I use one of these activities, I complete the vocabulary page with my students. I like to model technology, so I show my students how to use an online dictionary or thesaurus. I also model the use of a traditional dictionary or thesaurus.

Reading Response Pages

There are two different reading response pages included in this mini resource. These reading response pages can be easily aligned to CCSS.

Bats, Insects, Owls, Spiders- A Bundle of Interactive Learning

This ELA/Science bundle (fresh off the press today), might be just the thing to get your young learners engaged in reading and writing informational text! These interactive sets will keep them busy learning for weeks!

I find that when kids create their own materials, such as the photo book-tivities included in these sets, they tend to be more eager to write their short reports. A 4-page editable bat report template (not shown) is also included. This money-saving set of interactive activities, vocabulary, picture cards, posters, and writing templates make this bundle worth bagging! Suggested Grade Levels: 2-4

Thanks for checking out this bundle of interactive learning!
