Sound Cards - Easily identify, and use vowels, digraphs, and consonants.

The vowels. consonants and digraphs are separated so that they may be printed on different colors of paper for easy identification. Use them to play games, sort, match and identify letters and sounds!  Create words!  Check them out now!

Sound Cards

Use these consonant, vowel and digraph cards:

•           as flash cards to check the child’s letter-sound recognition. 

•           to play match-up games.

•           as home study cards once the sounds have been taught.

•           to create new words on a pocket chart or flat surface (reading).

•           to identify sounds in words (writing).

•           to assess letter-sound knowledge.

Some Suggestions: 

Double-side the vowel and consonant cards so that lowercase letters are on one side and upper case letters are on the other side.  Copy the vowels on one color of cover stock, the consonants on a second color and the digraphs are on a third color.   

Pair up the short and long vowel cards… /a, e, i, o, u/  and /ai, ee, ie, oa, ue/.  Talk about how it doesn’t take any longer to say an /a/ than an /ai/ …but… if you put your palms together and then move them apart as you say the sound, your hands will stop sooner for the short vowel sounds…the long vowels sounds must have two letters!

Reading for Meaning with humor for St. Patrick's Day!

 

Nothing grabs my students' attention more than something that is downright silly. They know I tend to make the odd 'mistake' when we're reading together, and that reading just HAS to make sense. Whenever I sense someone's attention (or foot, or elbow) beginning to drift, I'll throw in the odd error, for example:

 

Recently, we have completed the Pirate Pals Read and Write and More booklet together, and it occurred to me, again, that when kids anticipate fun and laughter, they are more willing to invest their energy and focus up front.

A 2nd grade student tries to get a peer to choose 'Saturn' instead of the correct answer for the setting question...

...then they laugh at the thought of pirates bringing a space monkey on a treasure hunt!

St. Patrick's Day is upon us. I read the story of St. Patrick to my grade one class years ago, and remember the pre-reading discussion well. A small group of my students believed that St. Patrick was a leprechaun, and others found the idea to be hilarious. The child who had expressed this idea was embarrassed and it had a significant impact on his confidence in sharing in groups, and taking risks in his learning, for some time. This, of course, took us off-track into a conversation about teasing, laughing at vs. laughing with others. I'm planning to give the students I see the advantage of knowing the true story of St. Patrick early, so they can be armed to laugh with their classmates!

This is a great unit for working on basic Math skills 

with a variety of primary aged children.

Playing card games involve Math skills. This is obviously inherent 
in the fact that there are numbers printed on almost every basic 
playing card. In this book there are simple tips on how to get 
cheap or free decks of playing cards, and how to manage playing 
cards in the classroom. I have also included instructions on how 
to play card games that are easy for Primary aged children, 
and are good for building basic Math skills. 

This unit has two types of card activities. Partner games, and 
individual worksheet activities. The first part includes 
organizational tips and lists the rules for using cards. There is no 
need for pen and pencil in these activities. Building strong Math 
skills can involve drill and repetition, but you can also reinforce 
these ideas by playing card games.

The second type of card activities involve worksheets. They are 
meant to be completed by a single child with a deck of cards of 
their own. The instructions for these are written on each page. 
I have also included a cover page which can be used to cover a
booklet or folder of these worksheets.

I'm Proud of You!

Teaching is all about relationships!

Build relationships with both parents and students by sending home “Be Proud Notes” with a few students every day. Write a quick sentence with a specific reason that parents should be proud of their child. I focus on perseverance and work ethic! Of all the things I do to build relationships with my students and their families, this is the one that always gets rave reviews at conference time!

You can print these postcards in color, but they are just as wonderful printed in black and white.

I have included a postcard template if you wish to mail them to your student’s homes. I don’t mail them. My students get a lot of joy by hand delivering these to their parents.
