FREE MATH LESSON - “Vertical Fraction Bars & Strips”

by Number Sense Guy
1st - 8th Grade

When you see two building next to each other, it is very easy to see which is taller, but harder to see which one is longer. Traditionally, we use fraction bars that are labeled and unlabeled that go horizontally. These are harder to manipulate, given that some people are left handed. When they FORM a fraction, especially out of paper, they push the pieces that they have already laid down. You would use these strips just like traditional ones, but you would build from the ground up and compare vertically instead of horizontally. Included in this set are blank strips, unit fraction strips, labeled strips and colored labeled strips for 1 whole, halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, sevenths, eighths, ninths, tenths, elevenths, and twelfths.
