STEAM - Biomimicry for Young Children - Animals in Snow

By Sparking Children's Thinkibility
Grades: Kindergarten -4th, homeschooling,  Biology, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking

Animals do the most amazing things in the snow. Some of the things they do can be used to design cities and jumping robots.

Lessons about biomimicry require a brave approach to teaching since there is a move away from an approach where teachers are asking questions and looking for quick answers. Instead, young learners are given an opportunity to shape and explore their own ideas. Biomimicry and bioinspiration are constantly evolving and new ideas are explored to solve problems and designing innovations.

The booklet contains the following animals
Fox, Polar Bear, Squirrel, Seal, Reindeer/Caribou

1. Introduction to biomimicry
2. Fox observations
3. When is it good not to be seen?
4. Design something that makes you almost invisible
5. Fox mousing robot
6. Squirrels have great paws
7. Snow digging machine
8. My snow city
9. Polar bears are fascinating
10. Feet like a polar bear
11. Picture inspiration - polar bear challenge
12. Acrostic poem
13. What if I was a seal? Invent a wet suit or a . . .
14. Whiskers
15. Whiskers - story writing
16. I am in awe of caribou because. . .
17. Chasing a thief challenge
18. Eyes that change color
19. Observation cards
20. How to use biomimicry in the classroom
21. Links and book tips
22. 2 posters

Snow Day Fun Winter Ten Frames Math Centers  (Quantities of 0 to 20)

I love clip card activities for little learners because I like for one resource to address more than one skill.  The school day is now so packed with academic standards to master that it is hard to fit in time for developmental areas such as fine motor skills.  These clip cards offer your little learners an opportunity to address Counting and Cardinality standards and work on fine motor development.  This very portable resource can be used in math centers, as early finisher activities, and in take home practice packets.

This resource allows for differentiation.   You may use all 21 cards in a set or select the ones which best meet your learners' needs.

This low prep resource has five sets of count and clip cards.  Just print, laminate, and cut out the cards.  Put the cards and clips in a zippered supply pouch.  You now have a fun and inviting math activity ready to use that also addresses fine motor development.

If you will please notice the pictures above, you will see that there are no rounded corners on cards.  With all straight edges, you can cut the cards out on a paper cutter. This makes preparation of the activities go much faster than cutting out with scissors.

I hope you and your learners enjoy these fun winter activities.

Happy Snow Day!!!

Snow Day Fun Winter Addition Math Centers (Sums of 0 to 10)

Learners develop addition fluency and fine motor skills in one easy to use resource.  There are five sets of addition clip cards included in this resource.  There is a recording page with matching graphics for each set of cards.  The cards may be used with or without the recording pages.

This resource is great if your school limits copying.  One of my friends lets her learners record their responses in their math journals instead of printing and copying the recording pages.  She just prints and laminates the cards.  She can use the cards year after year.  She has engaging math activities and documentation of her students' performance without making copies.

The cards make great early finisher activities, too.  Just put the cards and clips in a zippered supply pouch or plastic bag for a quick and easy early finisher activity.

I hope you and your learners enjoy these activities.

Happy Snow Day!

Winter STEM Challenges

Are you looking for ways to incorporate the Next Generation Science Standards into your winter themed learning? Or are you interested in a hands on approach to integrated science, technology, engineering and math? Try out a STEM Challenge!
In this bundle of 5 STEM challenges students will use their science, math, engineering and technology skills to build a variety of snow, winter, ice themed challenges.

Here is an example of one of the five challenges:

In the tallest snowman challenge, students will be asked to build the tallest snowman only using certain materials.

They will go through the engineering process to work with a team to accomplish this feat. After completion of the challenge, teams will measure and collect data on the other team's snowmen.
This data can be used to create graphs and have class discussions.

Frosty Friends Fact Family Fun (Sums and Minuends to 10)

This resource has the following components:
  • 5 fact family matching activities with differentiation options included)
  • 5 recording sheets
  • 10 printable practice pages with color graphics
  • 7 ink saving no-prep printable practice pages with black and white graphics

The fun winter themed matching activities may also be used as file folder games.

The fact family matching activities have a card with graphics and the numerals for the fact family. The matching activities can be used as file folder games. Learners match the 2 addition equations and 2 subtraction equations to the fact family correct card. There is a choice of 3 formats for the equation cards. The first option has the complete equation. Ex: 1 + 2 = 3. The second option has the sum or difference missing. Ex: 1 + 2 = _____. (The photo above shows this option.)  The third option has one addend or the subtrahend missing. Ex: 1 + _____ = 3. After completing the matching activity, students write the equations on the recording page.

These varied formats on the equation cards will allow you to choose the format that best meets your learners’ needs. The choices will also give you options for differentiation. These math center activities work well in inclusion classrooms because of the differentiation options.

This resource is very versatile.  In addition to the differentiation options offered by the equation formats, you may use the recording pages (without the matching activity) as no-prep printable worksheets.

Have a Wonderful Winter!
