STEAM - Biomimicry for Young Children - Animals in Snow

By Sparking Children's Thinkibility
Grades: Kindergarten -4th, homeschooling,  Biology, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking

Animals do the most amazing things in the snow. Some of the things they do can be used to design cities and jumping robots.

Lessons about biomimicry require a brave approach to teaching since there is a move away from an approach where teachers are asking questions and looking for quick answers. Instead, young learners are given an opportunity to shape and explore their own ideas. Biomimicry and bioinspiration are constantly evolving and new ideas are explored to solve problems and designing innovations.

The booklet contains the following animals
Fox, Polar Bear, Squirrel, Seal, Reindeer/Caribou

1. Introduction to biomimicry
2. Fox observations
3. When is it good not to be seen?
4. Design something that makes you almost invisible
5. Fox mousing robot
6. Squirrels have great paws
7. Snow digging machine
8. My snow city
9. Polar bears are fascinating
10. Feet like a polar bear
11. Picture inspiration - polar bear challenge
12. Acrostic poem
13. What if I was a seal? Invent a wet suit or a . . .
14. Whiskers
15. Whiskers - story writing
16. I am in awe of caribou because. . .
17. Chasing a thief challenge
18. Eyes that change color
19. Observation cards
20. How to use biomimicry in the classroom
21. Links and book tips
22. 2 posters

Be a Snowflake Detective: Sparkling Crystal Fun & Facts

By: Sparking Children’s Thinkibility
Grades Kindergarten-4th Science, Geometry, Winter

All a snowflake detective need is snow, a magnifierglass and patience. As with all beauty, part of the allure is mystery. And snowflakes are beautiful.

Understanding snowflakes are not as simple as it might sound. But one thing is certain, namely that inner working of the way ice crystals grow in the clouds is a process that is still a bit of a puzzle to scientists.

A snowflake begins life as a dust particle in a cloud. If it is cold, water vapor condenses on the dust and crystals are formed. The crystals grow and grow and eventually they become too heavy and large and a snowflake falls out of the cloud.

This package contains:
  1. How many snowflakes can you see?
  2. Lifecycle cards
  3. Different types of snowflake cards
  4. Think diving – What is the connection between ice crystals and a snowflake?
  5. Fun facts
  6. Snow Words
  7. Sparkling Crystal Dictionary + Add your own words
  8. Ask the Snowman Sparkling Questions about Snowflakes and Crystals
  9. How Does a Snowflake Grow?
  10. Can you make a giant snowflake?
  11. Describe a snowflake
  12. How to grow a snowflake?
  13. Imagine strong winds
  14. Random inspiration and Symmetry Using a Snowflake Dice (template included)
  15. Imagine different colors
  16. Snowflake Math Detective
  17. Story writing – What if the seasons get mixed up?
I love mind mapping and you can download a mind map for free here.

FREE MATH LESSON - “Winter Numbers & Counting w/ Ten Frames Differentiated QR Code Task Cards Free”

by Lessons for Little Ones by Tina O'Block
Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten

Practice numbers to 20, number sense, and counting skills this winter with differentiated ten frame task cards & pages that can be used as a small group activity, center activity, an around the room (write the room, SCOOT) activity, and more. Includes 2 sets of color-coded task cards (one set with self-checking QR codes, one without) and 1 set of differentiated printable pages. This is a sample set from my Winter Numbers with Ten Frames Differentiated QR Code Task Cards which includes 3 sets of task cards and differentiated pages.

Students count the marshmallows in the ten frames in each cup of hot chocolate and record their answers on printable pages. If you are using the cards with QR codes, students can scan the code to see the number (in large print that is clearly visible to young students) and receive immediate feedback.

You receive:

♦ Task cards with cups of hot chocolate with marshmallows in ten frames for numbers 1-20

♦ Task cards with cups of hot chocolate with marshmallows in ten frames for numbers 1-20 with self-checking QR codes

♦ Printable page for tracing the numbers (1-20)

♦ Printable page for tracing the numbers (1-10)

♦ Printable page for tracing the numbers (11-20)

Addresses the following common core standards:

K.CC.A.2 - Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).

K.CC.A.3 - Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).

K.CC.B.4 - Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.

K.CC.B.4.A - When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.

K.CC.B.4.B - Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.

K.CC.B.4.C - Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.

K.CC.B.5 - Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
