FREE MISC. LESSON - “1492: Columbus Day Math and Literacy Activities”

1492 is a collection of activities that can be used in centers, as morning work, and whole group during your studies about Christopher Columbus. 

Contents:

1. 1492 Math Challenge: students design a poster to show the different ways the number 1492 can be written or used. There is both a task card and a sample poster for students.

2. Math Riddle: Students solve addition and subtraction facts with and without regrouping to answer a question about Christopher Columbus.

3. In 1492 is the poem so many of us learn the first stanza of to remember Columbus. It is written to be read as a Readers’ Theater. There is both a color version and a B&W version.

4. Directions and examples for 2 types of poems, a Haiku and an Acrostic.

5. An ABC/Vocabulary task card.

6. Character Cards with short passages. Students read about either King Ferdinand, Queen Isabella, or Columbus and then create a character card for one or all of the main characters.

7. Writing Prompt task card and themed writing paper.
