This adaptable class or home activity adapts the original Frayer Model concept for language and vocabulary first for building mathematical vocabulary and then additionally for problem solving. The original model includes constructing a definition, characteristics, examples and non-examples for a given vocabulary word. Included in this activity, are four adaptations to this model. The first graphic organizer keeps the original distinctions yet focuses on math concepts. The second graphic organizer uses real-world connections. The third includes constructing a related word problem. Finally, the fourth graphic organizer is a guide to the problem-solving process for specific math problems.
While the graphic organizers are fairly basic, they work well for most elementary and secondary math concepts and problems. Continue using this structure throughout the school year to help students organize their thinking and develop strong habits of mind. Some teachers may choose to send an organizer home with a specific word problem to be completed as homework. Choose what works for you!
