GIVEAWAY

Here's what's up with Sandra's Savvy Teaching Tips.

Happy Saturday! I hope you're relaxing and getting a chance to enjoy the weekend. It's pouring rain here in Vancouver this morning, but hopefully things will dry out for my children's baseball games this afternoon.

I had the chance to participate in a fun product swap hosted by Melissa over at Jungle Learners.
http://junglelearners.blogspot.com/2015/04/welcome-to-another-fabulous-product-swap.html

This time around I was partnered with Lisa from Second Grade Stories. I feel very lucky to have been partnered with her.  When I looked around her store, I think I wishlisted half of it.  She has a real science focus which I love.   And check out how cute her blog is.  I'm so happy that I found another great teacher-blogger to follow.

I've only just started using this great unit with my kiddos.  But here's a quick summary of the great stuff included.

Want your own copy?
Lisa has graciously offered up a copy for you to win.

ELA Text Feature Lesson - "Information Shark"

by First Grade Diva Creations
1st Grade & 2nd Grade

Information Shark

Do you want your students to be sharks at finding information?

You need to add grade appropriate informational text, print, and teach.  These activities can be used as a unit or one piece at a time.  They can be used multiple times throughout the school year.  I use them for whole group instruction in the beginning of the year, but by January they make a great literacy center.

Twelve mini-posters for text features are included.  These provide a great reference for children when hung in classroom.
Text features included in poster are title page, heading, subheadings, pictures, illustrations, charts and graphs, captions, map, index, cutaway, diagrams and labels, bold print, table of contents, and glossary.

The pinch card in this resource is one of my favorite tools.  My students have a laminated copy in their book bins.  It serves as an easy reference for them when reading informational text.  It also makes for a great way to check for understanding during whole group instruction.

There are six  text feature printable activities that can be used all year long with all of your informational units.

VALENTINE'S DAY FREEBIE - "A Valentine's Day Project: Let me count the ways I love you!"

This is a quick and thoughtful Valentine’s Day Project for elementary students to give to their parent(s). I have done this project for many years and have had many parents say this is the best Valentine’s Day present ever!
The Task: students write a real book about different things they love about their parent(s). First, use the outline provided to have the students make a first draft of their title and answers to the ten questions . Then I usually conference with each student individually to help them expand on their thoughts and with spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Then to publish it, I have the students create a final draft by hand or on the computer. Then I bind the book with a binding machine or with three strands of red or pink ribbon to hand tie it into a book.
If you want to take it step further, I have had the students then type up their pages and create a book on storybird.com. Storybird.com is a free site that illustrators use to promote their artwork. This option takes more effort on your part because you will need to set up a teacher account and add your students and give them some direction so they can use it. If you go the storybird.com way then I always triple check their typing and spelling before publishing it on the site because after it’s published it can’t be edited. The published book will create a link to their digital online book that parents can view at home and/or purchase an actual book with their children’s words and artwork the students choose for each page. The books come in a variety of styles and prices. I have had many parents purchase a hard cover book in the past.
Either method you choose to showcase their loving words will be a treasured keepsake of parents for many years to come.
