FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Thesis Statement Checklist”

by Dianne Mason
10th - 12th Grade

This handy checklist gives students a useful tool for determining whether or not they have a strong, successful thesis. Used after students have written the first draft of their paper, the questions require them to evaluate their writing to determine whether or not the thesis statement makes a claim, if it passes the “So what?” test, if it is debatable or informational, and many other issues associated with formulating a strong, powerful thesis statement.

It is such a great tool in helping students to improve their writing that I’ve included it in 4 of my other expository writing products:

How to Write Powerful Thesis Statements
Expository Writing: 4 Revision Handouts
Expository Writing Process Stage 3: Revision
