Language Arts Lesson - "Improve Student Writing by Using Checklist Bookmarks"
By Mary Pat Mahoney
Grades 5-8
Ever feel like you’re saying the same things over and over again when your students are working on writing projects? Providing students with a small checklist to follow as they write, promotes student independence.
*Students can focus on specific writing objectives, internalizing essential elements, and self-monitoring writing.
*Students can independently review the basic requirements for writing assignments rather than waiting for you to do so.
*Provide scaffolding for students who need extra help in remembering the complex steps and details necessary for writing.
*Reinforce writing vocabulary and skills.
*Offer differentiation for more skilled writers. Checklists offer students confirmation that they have the necessary elements for an assignment.
*The bookmarks are small, can be glued into a notebook and reused.
*Eleven different bookmarks.
These checklists are based on the Six Traits of Writing.
Thanks!
